And away we go

The year is nearly over. Outside the usual revelers are firing thunderous pyrotechnics skyward to hurry this year along the way. It used to bother me as I grew older but remembering back when we were in our celebratory party years, we were the ones with the matches.

Now things are different. The old crowd has scattered those who are still alive. Those left don’t have the fortitude to stay up that late.

I indulged in some homemade eggnog about half an hour ago. I brewed it up yesterday and it is good. Not cloyingly sweet like store-bought not. I made it simple and not too sweet, with just the perfect amount of my favorite Jameson whiskey mixed in. I even grated my last whole nutmeg across the glass.

Cheers I said to Chica, the Alpha Chihuahua. Cheers to both Sheena and George, the rambunctious seven month old kittens. Cheers to my son who turned in early after putting a full day at his business. No response from anyone as I sit in front of the small fire dying out in the fireplace. It was seventy-one degrees today but a cold front is only a few hours from here. Tomorrow we’ll need a fire. Tonight, not so much.

I have all the lights lit on my Nativity. I love the lights and flickering tea-light candles. I use mostly blue lights and it is peaceful here. And quiet not a sound except the soft snores of the aging dog.

It’s time for this old woman to wrap up the year. It doesn’t matter if it is still three hours until the year is over . By the time I turn out all the lights, it will be nine o’clock.

Happy New Year to all my friends and relatives. May the incoming year bring peace on earth and good health to us all.
