This book was a slow yet, compelling read. I found myself reading in spurts, followed by rereading to gain clarity into the strengths of the main character, Adrien. The author’s titling of each chapter with the name of the character speaking was initially confusing to me. As the book progressed, those chapter titles were what formed each character’s voice in the richly told story of a time in Texas leading up to the early Civil War.
This has a scent of Gone WithThe Wind with several monumental differences stirred in with the sameness.
I found myself cheering for Adrien as he seemed to first give up, then give in to his demon before conquering him!
Well-defined characters and I was delighted at the end to learn this book is but first in a trilogy.
I’ll be reading the successively released books to follow these characters! I find myself musing about some of the story even after I’ve finished the book. For me, that is an important sign of a books accomplishment.
